Terms and Conditions
The terms and conditions published here apply to meal plans in effect through spring and summer of 2018. New meal plans starting in fall 2018 will have updated terms and conditions. If you signed a housing contract for fall 2018, it includes either the Blue Residential Meal Plan or the Gold Residential Meal Plan; please refer to your Housing contract for terms and conditions.
Cal 1 Card
Cal Dining uses a computerized system to control access to its facilities. The Cal 1 Card is encoded for the appropriate Meal Plan specified on the Cal 1 Card holder’s account. No meal shall be provided by Cal Dining without presentation of a valid Cal 1 Card for students, faculty, or staff. Cal 1 Cards are not transferable. In the absence of the Cal 1 Card, meals may be purchased with cash, credit, or debit.
The Cal 1 Card is valuable and should be protected accordingly. You are solely responsible for immediately reporting / deactivating a lost or stolen Cal 1 Card. The most effective way to do so is online by logging onto your account (cal1card.berkeley.edu/login). If you do not have access to the internet when your card is lost or stolen, reports can be made in person at the Cal 1 Card Office or by calling 1.866.2UCBCARD. Once the card is reported missing, you assume no further liability for unauthorized use. A $25 non-refundable replacement fee will be assessed to your student billing account. If your card was stolen and you filed a police report for that incident, the replacement fee will be waived with the provision of the corresponding police report when requesting the replacement. Replacement cards are only issued to students with a current registration status in the applicable academic term. NOTE: If you withdraw from classes, the Cal 1 Card cannot be replaced if you lose it and you will not be able to use your meal plan.
Meal swipes are used at the four residence hall dining commons: Crossroads, Café 3, Foothill, and Clark Kerr. Flex Dollars may be used to pay for guest access in the dining commons. Meal swipes are non-transferrable.
Flex Dollars are used at the following Cal Dining locations:
- Convenience store locations: The Den, Bear Market, Cub Market, and the CKCub
- Restaurants and kiosk locations: Brown’s, Terrace Café, The Golden Bear Cafe, GBC Produce Stand, Common Grounds, The Pro Shop, and Concessions at Haas Pavilion and California Memorial Stadium.
Students must show a valid Cal 1 Card at every meal. Cal 1 Cards and privileges are non-transferable. Meal plan access is by Cal 1 Card swipe only.
Cal Dining locations close for holiday periods; please review all important dates relating to Meal Plan service.
Cal Dining makes every effort to identify ingredients that may trigger allergic or other adverse reactions for individuals with food allergies or intolerance. Our staff is trained and educated on food allergies and gluten-free diets on an ongoing basis and they ensure that items marked gluten friendly are made without gluten-containing ingredients. However, due to the volume of meals served and items used each day along with food product changes from our vendors, we cannot guarantee that every allergen or gluten source in the food served will be identified and labeled. There is a small possibility that, without notice to us, manufacturers of the commercial foods we use can change the formulation at any time. Cross contact may also occur despite our best efforts to prevent it. Customers concerned with food allergens and gluten must be aware of these risks. Cal Dining cannot assume any liability for adverse reactions to food consumed, or items one may come in contact with while eating at any Cal Dining facility or catered event. Customers with life threatening food allergies who may need to use an EpiPen should be carrying their own at all times. Cal Dining staff is not trained to administer EpiPens and cannot provide or administer them.
Cal Dining strives to provide a variety of meal options, including vegetarian and vegan selections. Although not guaranteed, special diets can generally be accommodated within our regular offerings. Residents are encouraged to meet with our registered dietitian to discuss any special dietary concerns or food allergies by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Meal plans are included in the residence hall (“room and board”) on-campus housing contract rate for residents. Meal plans are selected at the time you accept your housing offer and make your initial contract payment.
Residence Hall contract holders receive meal plans that include access to the dining commons and a declining balance, or debit, program called flex dollars. Residence Hall contract holders, as a condition of their Residence Hall contract, are required to have and are automatically enrolled in the Blue Residential Meal Plan. Residence Hall students may select to upgrade to the Gold Residential Meal Plan at any time during the year by logging into the Housing Portal.
Period of Contract
Fall and spring semester dates as defined in the official University academic calendar shall constitute the period of the Blue Meal Plan or Gold Meal Plan contract, except for holiday periods. All meal plan contracts begin on the Sunday prior to when fall semester instruction begins, and end on the last Sunday of spring semester. Please view the UC Berkeley academic calendar for up-to-date information.
Meal Plan Terms
The Blue Residential Standard Meal Plan provides 12 meal swipes* per week and $500 flex dollars to use within the academic year ($250 per semester). Meals reset each week and do not carry over from week to week. Meals that are not eaten during the week cannot be accumulated or saved. This plan allows only one meal swipe per designated meal period. The Blue Residential Meal Plan is automatically included in the housing contract and fees.
The Gold Residential Meal Plan offers students unlimited meal swipes in the residence hall dining commons (all day, any day, no expiry) and $700 flex dollars. This plan is for students who wish to have unlimited access to the dining commons, including additional beverages and snacks. In addition to the daily multiple “all-you-care-to-eat” swipes at the residence hall dining commons, this plan provides $700 flex dollars per academic year ($350 per semester) to use in retail purchases. (Meaning, a student has all day, any day meal swipes to dine in any four dining commons and at any time. The $700 flex dollars are used for retail purchases, guest meals, late night dining, and/or for concessions at Cal Athletic events). The cost of the Gold Residential Meal Plan is an additional $600 per semester. Upgrade to the Gold Residential Meal Plan at any time during the year by logging into the Housing Portal.
*Please note that any meal swipes do not apply to late night dining.
Additional flex dollar add-on options are available.
In fall semester, 50% of meal plan flex dollars are allocated to meal plan accounts. Should a student not use all fall semester flex dollars, all unused flex dollars will carry over from fall semester to the subsequent spring semester. Flex dollars will not carry over into summer session, or from academic year to academic year. Any meal plan flex dollars not used by the last day of any spring semester will be forfeited. If a student cancels his/her housing contract, the flex dollars will not rollover. When a meal plan is cancelled, all meal swipes and flex dollars are forfeited immediately upon cancellation.
Housing Contracts Signed Without a Meal Plan indicated
The Blue Residential Meal Plan is the default meal plan that is automatically assigned. The Residence Hall housing contract includes room and board; therefore, if a student cancels his/her housing contract, s/he is also cancelling his/her meal plan, and is not entitled to a meal plan refund or credit for unused swipes, and no rollover of flex dollars from fall semester to spring semester.
Meal Plan Changes
Residents in on-campus housing may change their meal plans at scheduled “meal plan change periods” during the academic year. Meal plan changes can be made the first two weeks of the fall semester and from December 1, 2018 - January 16, 2019 for spring semester. Changes to meal plans can only be made via the Housing Office (email@example.com or phone: 510.642.4108). Outside of the official change period, students may only upgrade their meal plan from Blue Residential to Gold Residential for the additional cost of $600 per semester for the Gold Residential plan. No other meal plan change requests will be approved outside of the official change period.
Meal Plan Cancellation
Students living in the residence halls are required to have a Meal Plan and may not cancel for any reason. UC Berkeley has a combined room and board program and does not separate the cost of the Meal Plan from room fees. The Residence Hall housing contract includes room and board; therefore, if a student cancels his/her housing contract, s/he is also cancelling his/her meal plan, and is not entitled to a meal plan refund or credit for unused swipes, and no rollover of flex dollars from fall semester to spring semester.
Undergraduate and graduate students must have a current and active registration indicating that they are a student in Bear Facts to purchase a meal plan and purchase add-on flex dollars.
Period of Contract
Fall and spring semester dates as defined in the official University academic calendar shall constitute the period of the Bear Meal Plan or Cub Meal Plan contract, except for holiday periods. All meal plan contracts begin on the Sunday prior to when fall semester instruction begins, and end on the last Sunday of spring semester. Please view the UC Berkeley academic calendar for up-to-date information.
The Bear Meal Plan and Cub Meal Plan contracts are valid during the academic year only. No contracts are sold for only fall semester or only spring semester. At the time of purchase of a Bear or Cub plan, the meal swipes and flex dollars are credited to the student’s Cal 1 Card account. For the Bear and Cub plans, should a student not use all their meal swipes or flex dollars during fall semester, the remaining meal swipes and flex dollars will carry over through the end of spring semester. For the Bear and Cub plans, meal swipes and flex dollars will not carry over from academic year to academic year, nor are they carried over into summer sessions, therefore all unused meal swipes or flex dollars must be spent by the last day of the academic year, otherwise they are forfeited.
The Bear Meal Plan and Cub Meal Plan may be purchased starting in August 2018, as specified under Important Dates. The meal swipes and flex dollar amount associated with each plan will be billed to your account; costs are not prorated based on date of purchase. Once you have a Bear or Cub plan, you may purchase additional add-on flex dollars anytime throughout the academic year.
For undergraduate students: The Bear Meal Plan and the Cub Meal Plan may be paid in two (2) installments if purchased in Fall Semester, and one (1) installment if purchased in Spring Semester.
Installments are: billed to CalCentral Account and due September and February. These installments will be shown on a student's e-bill in Bear Facts. The statements will indicate the specific date payment is due. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that payments are received at Campus Billing & Payment Services, 140 University Hall, on time, or be subject to late fines and other sanctions. Fees will also be assessed for any returned checks and will be charged on your CalCentral Account statement.
Should an account become delinquent, action will be taken to withhold meal service, block registration, and withhold the issuance of transcripts. This includes any add-on points purchased. If meal service is withheld, a student will not receive a refund for meals missed due to sanctions. To prevent such sanctions, contact the Cal Student Central Office prior to the fifteenth of the payment month.
For graduate students: Bear Meal Plans and Cub Meal Plans must be purchased online using credit card payment. Accepted credit cards include Visa, Mastercard and Discover. Graduate meal plans cannot be billed to your CARS account.
Refunds, Transfers, Cancellations
There are no refunds or transfers on the Bear Meal Plan or the Cub Meal Plan. There is no cancellation deadline or fee. All meal swipes and flex dollars expire at the end of the academic year.
Meal Plan Changes
Changes to your meal plan will be approved December 1st - January 10th. Students may request a change to their Meal Plan by submitting a request to: firstname.lastname@example.org
The current plan will be cancelled, along with bonus points and the new plan and bonus points will be activated. Any points used in Spring Semester up until change date will be deducted from new plan. A $50.00 administrative fee will be imposed for any approved meal plan change.
Graduating or Studying Abroad
If graduating in fall semester or studying abroad in spring semester, students may cancel their meal plan by emailing email@example.com. Students who are graduating or studying abroad are allowed to cancel to avoid penalty or cancellation fee. Verification of graduation or study abroad program will be requested. Failure to contact BusOps will result in additional charges to students Cal Student Central account.
